Graham Falconer
Graham Falconer grew up in rural southern Ontario in Huron County and currently resides in Waterloo, Ontario. He graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University with a degree in contemporary composition. As a student, Graham studied a wide variety of styles and genres of music that have influenced his compositional process.
In his early work, Graham focussed on humour and dramaturgy to evoke laughter in his audience, whether the work is relevant to music or not.
As his style developed, Graham started to draw more attention to the sounds he could create. Layering different textures and timbres, this led to the experimentation of restrictions, rules and varying forms of process music. Graham is fond of using a limited range of pitch classes and using the limitations to his advantage with the sounds he creates. Since the 2020 pandemic he has been working on the simple pleasantries one can create with sound.
Graham currently finds passion in his admiration of birds. Witnessing their movements through the air, hearing their calls in an open forest. How can one adapt their existence to a “musical” representation? As Graham explores this inspiration, he is looking at ways to incorporate his past experience with dramaturgy and new interest of movement in the presentation of his new works.
Considered a conceptual composer, Graham is always thinking of the overall concept, approach, and purpose before putting anything together. Graham always composes with the end purpose of each work in mind.
While not brainstorming concepts or executing them, Graham can be found bird watching, eating and making delicious food and spending time with his loved ones.
