Andrea Hobson

Andrea Hobson is a brass performer, music educator and composer. She was a finalist in the Lubner music competition and was awarded the Lubner MAID music scholarship to study music. She studied at Rhodes University and the University of the Free State, under Prof David Scarr and Dr Paul Loeb van Zuilenberg. She graduated in 2010 with a Masters in Music majoring in Euphonium performance, Brass pedagogy and Composition. She moved to Jena, Germany, in 2019 and teaches lower brass, ensemble class and theory at the Orchesterschuler KLANGwelt. She is the principal euphonium for Brass Band BlechKLANG and plays trombone and euphonium for the Brass Band BlechKLANG Soloist ensemble.

Andrea studied composition at Rhodes University under Pieter Louis van Dijk (classical composition) and John Edwards (jazz orchestration). Through her jazz orchestration classes she started to realise that African soundscapes were lacking in the classical brass world and this has influenced most of her writing. While in South Africa, she was one of the founding members of The Phax Trio which was dedicated to presenting new contemporary styles of music for wind instruments. She has also been involved in projects including Proboscis, the Baobab Trio, and 09 (a collaboration with the Night Live string quartet), where she composed and arranged music for the various performances. Andrea has composed music for euphonium soloists, brass band, brass ensemble and orchestra. These works have been performed in the USA, the UK, Singapore, Germany and South Africa.

She recently had her proposal grant for 12 play – a – long duets for brass instruments accepted by the Kulturstiftung des Freistaats Thüringen, Germany. These will be produced this year (2021) and published under the shop page on her website.
